About two years ago I started paying close attention to the ingredients in the food I was buying at the grocery store. If I couldn’t pronounce it, it had no business being in my shopping cart. Keep it clean, tangerine—ya feel me? Soon after that, said neurotic habits eventually invaded my skincare and toiletry drawers. I needed all the cleanest skincare ingredients and natural deodorant, and I wanted it delivered as soon as possible.
When I first told my friends I was going natural, they laughed. The common misconception with natural deodorant is that it doesn’t work. And, well, I’m here to tell you that that’s actually true (but only 80% of the time). I’ve tried a handful of brands over the past 12 months, and each come with their own set of pros and cons. That being said, using natural deodorant that may not work is better than the alternative (in my opinion).
Does the aluminum in regular old deodorant cause breast cancer? Who really knows? In today’s culture, you can’t go to the mall without coming in contact with something that supposedly causes a tumor. And to be frank, I think people are overly sensitive and paranoid. However, on the same coin, that infamous aluminum’s sole purpose is to plug your sweat glands and reduce the amount of perspiration that your body produces— which isn’t good. While body odor may stink, sweating is actually really good for you and is something we should allow to happen naturally! It helps us to regulate our temperature and release toxins while we exercise, and that’s something we shouldn’t try to deprive ourselves of.
Moral of the story: I think we need to be more aware of the chemicals we put in and on our body. So for that reason, I go natural.
Being that I’m fairly active, and that I workout often, I need a deodorant that actually works. Here’s the thing: most natural deodorants don’t. The first natural deodorant I tried was Native, and while it helped with perspiration, it was rough going on and irritated my skin. The second one I tried, LAVANILA, was the complete opposite. It went on super smooth, but didn’t last more than 2-3 hours, which was not ideal when going for a run or in a workout class.
So, here we are, I decided to give Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant a try. Much to my surprise, this stuff actually works! I’m talkin’ three-mile run, haven’t showered all day, still smell like roses, works. It’s like the unicorn of natural-deodorants and I’m here for it.
Schmidt’s just launched their Lily of the Valley collection in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute. With every purchase, 5% will be donated to the Jane Goodall Institute!
