Full disclaimer, I love the nineties. I collected Beanie Babies like it was my job, the Spice Girls were my jam, my-size-barbie and American Girl dolls were my besties and I had a binder full of Pokemon cards sitting next to me every time I played Nintendo 64. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t still get excited when the Rugrats or Rocket Power reruns come on TV. And don’t even get me started on Disney movies, I die. Talk about a blast from the past.
Although my Pokemon cards are long gone, overalls (like most fashion trends from the 90’s) are back. Overalls were pretty dang cool in 1997, you know, paired with 5 inch platform sneakers, a stretchy choker and butterfly clips. This time they’re distressed, paired with heels and ultra-chic. Can you say, blue jean baby (cue Elton John)?
Styling any trend from a previous decade can be intimidating. Some people still can’t get onboard with crop tops and Birkenstocks, which blows my mind (because birks are life). So, how do you wear overalls without looking like Bob the Builder? Two words: stripes and gold.
I paired my distressed overalls with a striped, fitted tank for an easy California-chic style. To mix in a little boho-glam, I added a gold beaded crescent necklace, gemstone bracelet and gold stacked rings. I suggest wearing some heeled shoes to make the ‘alls a little less mid-west and more modern. Throw on a bold lipstick, grab a clutch with gold accents and rock your overalls like it’s 1990-something.
